To save Kwesi’s life we must raise Can. $60,000 for his 2-week hospital stay, associated inpatient and outpatient costs, and accommodation while recovering from surgery.

We NEED your help.

We CANNOT do it without YOU!

In June/July 2009, a team of 10 Canadians joined a team of 30 Americans on a medical outreach mission to Guyana. The entire team spent 2 days in Parika, Essequibo, and 2 days in Fort Wellington, Berbice. During the 4 days approx. 800 patients were seen and treated by the many physicians who volunteered their services to the mission.

While in Parika Dr. Ralph Ruby, an Otolaryngologist from St. Joseph’s Health Care London, Ontario, met a 31 year old young man, Kwesi Nelson.  Kwesi and his wife, Denise, have a 4 year old daughter, Kesi.

In the fall of 2007, Kwesi was diagnosed by a Guyanese Otolaryngologist with a tumour in his right jaw.  Unfortunately, the Guyanese physicians do not have the expertise to perform the required surgery, and without it Kwesi’s tumour will grow and cut off his airway, ultimately ending his young life.  Dr. Ruby therefore decided to bring this case back to Canada and ask one of his colleagues, Dr. Kevin Fung, a Head & Neck surgeon at the Victoria Campus of the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) in London, Ontario, to perform Kwesi’s surgery pro-bono.   Dr. Fung immediately agreed and will be assisted by one of his colleagues, Dr. Anthony Nichols, another Head & Neck surgeon at the Victoria Campus of LHSC whose parents are from Guyana.  Moreover, Dr. Fung was successful in having the fee for the Anaesthesiologist waived for this surgery.
