Details of Kwesi's Surgery

Although Kwesi will be in the hospital for 14 days, he will actually be in Jamaica for approx. 2-3 months.  When he arrives, he'll have to see Dr. Doonquah in his clinic for pre-operative assessments.  He will also have to see an anesthesiologist to make sure he is healthy enough to withstand the operation.  He then has to have blood work done, a CT scan of the head and neck to determine the extent of the tumor, and a CT-angiogram of the legs to confirm adequate blood supply to the feet and leg bones before surgery.

The surgery itself will take 10-14 hours.  As Kwesi's tumor is arising from the jaw bone (mandible), Dr. Doonquah has to resect (remove) about half of his jaw bone to remove the tumor.  He will then take a piece of bone from Kwesi's leg (fibula free flap), reshape it, and transplant it to reconstruct his jaw.  This will restore his appearance, and allow him to speak and eat normally.  He will also need a temporary tracheotomy and nasogastric feeding tube while the tissues are healing, for about a week, before he is allowed to eat.
