Mission Accomplished - Kwesi back in Guyana.

posted Apr 16, 2011 8:29 AM by Yvonne Triesman

After 2-½ months in Jamaica, Kwesi and his wife, Denise, have finally been reunited with their daughter, Kesi, and the rest of their family in Guyana, following the successful surgery to remove the tumour in Kwesi’s jaw and its intricate reconstruction.  We’d like to thank Dr. Ladi Doonquah and his team for their surgical expertise, care and compassion throughout Kwesi’s stay in Jamaica.  We’d also like to thank the University Hospital of the West Indies, especially Dr. Trevor McCartney and Mr. David Walker for their patience and professionalism.  Our sincere thanks go out as well to all members of the Guyanese community in Jamaica for welcoming Kwesi and Denise into their community and supporting them throughout their difficult period.  And last, but certainly not least, we’d like to thank Seymour and Pamela George for providing support, counselling, accommodation and meals to Kwesi and Denise.  The Georges have been true angels.

Kwesi was discharged from the hospital today.  He's recovering nicely but will have to stay in Jamaica for at least another 2-3 weeks before he's well enough to return to Guyana.

Thanks to the Ruimveldt Lions Club.

We are indebted to the Ruimveldt Lions Club for paying the airfare for Kwesi to travel to Jamaica.  We really appreciate your generosity.

Update on Kwesi - 1 Week Post Op.

Kwesi continues to recover rapidly.  The drains were  removed from his jaw and his hip a few days ago and he's walking on his own.  The bandages were removed from his jaw on Sunday and so far everything looks good.  Although his jaw is still wired and his face is still swollen, he's able to speak a bit.  He's however still being fed through a tube.  It is anticipated that he will be in the hospital for another week or two after which he'll be discharged to recover fully in Jamaica (which will take an additional 4-5 weeks) before he's well enough to return to Guyana.

Kwesi's Surgery.

I  received a phone call from Jamaica very late last night to inform me that Kwesi's surgery was very successful.   As Kwesi's jaw is wired and he's unable to eat, a feeding tube has been inserted into his stomach.  Although he had minimal blood loss, he also has a tube to drain all the excess fluid.   A piece of bone was taken from his left hip to reconstruct his face.   He's lost 5 bottom teeth as a result of the surgery.  He's currently alert and on the road to recovery.

I thank God that our prayers have been answered.  I'd also like to thank Dr. McCartney, the CEO of the University Hospital of the West Indies, Dr. Doonquah and his team, Pamela George, the nurse, for providing such great care to Kwesi.  I'd also like to thank you, the donors, for without your generosity, this surgery would not have been a reality.

Thank you to Synthes.

We'd like to thank Blaine Prentice and Synthes for their very generous donation of plates, screws, screw driver and drill bits for Kwesi's surgery.  These were forwarded to Jamaica to be used in today's surgery.

We've finally received official notification from the University of the West Indies Hospital in Jamaica that they're willing to perform Kwesi's surgery.  The surgery will be done by Dr. Ladi Doonquah who is currently trying to come up with the firm date for the surgery.   The proposed time period is sometime towards the end of January, 2011.

We're currently in final discussions with physicians in various Caribbean islands who are willing to perform Kwesi's surgery.  We hope to have a decision in the very near future.
